On using the CMB shift parameter in tests of models of dark energy
نویسنده
چکیده
Context. The so-called shift parameter is related to the position of the first acoustic peak in the power spectrum of the temperature anisotropies of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropies. It is an often used quantity in simple tests of dark energy models. However, the shift parameter is not directly measurable from the cosmic microwave background, and its value is usually derived from the data assuming a spatially flat cosmology with dark matter and a cosmological constant. Aims. To evaluate the effectiveness of the shift parameter as a constraint on dark energy models. Methods. We discuss the potential pitfalls in using the shift parameter as a test of non-standard dark energy models. Results. By comparing to full CMB fits, we show that combining the shift parameter with the position of the first acoustic peak in the CMB power spectrum improves the accuracy of the test considerably.

Geometrical constraints on dark energy models
This contribution intends to give a pedagogical introduction to the topic of dark energy (the mysterious agent supposed to drive the observed late time acceleration of the Universe) and to various observational tests which require only assumptions on the geometry of the Universe. Those tests are the supernovae luminosity, the CMB shift, the direct Hubble data, and the baryon acoustic oscillatio...
متن کاملConstraints on early dark energy from CMB lensing and weak lensing tomography
Dark energy can be studied by its influence on the expansion of the Universe as well as on the growth history of the large-scale structure. In this paper, we follow the growth of the cosmic density field in early dark energy cosmologies by combining observations of the primary CMB temperature and polarisation power spectra at high redshift, of the CMB lensing deflection field at intermediate re...
متن کامل2 01 0 Figures of merit for present and future dark energy probes
We compare current and forecasted constraints on dynamical dark energy models from Type Ia supernovae and the cosmic microwave background using figures of merit based on the volume of the allowed dark energy parameter space. For a two-parameter dark energy equation of state that varies linearly with the scale factor, and assuming a flat universe, the area of the error ellipse can be reduced by ...
متن کاملClosed universe and the first Doppler - peak of the CMB spectrum
We study universe models which are intrinsically closed and are full of a quintessence scalar field, besides the Cold Dark Matter component. We use these to depict diverse flat Cold Dark Matter models. With the background geometry specified by the Friedman-Robertson-Walker metric, we include among them the standard Cold Dark Matter, the Cosmological Constant Cold Dark Matter and the Dark Energy...
متن کاملProbing Dark Energy Using Its Density Instead of Its Equation of State
The variation of dark energy density with redshift, ρX(z), provides a critical clue to the nature of dark energy. Since ρX(z) depends on the dark energy equation of state wX(z) through an integral, ρX(z) can be constrained more tightly than wX(z) given the same observational data. We demonstrate this explicitly using current type Ia supernova (SN Ia) data [the Tonry/Barris sample], together wit...
